The Preface

from The Blackwell Letters, a novel by Jennifer Davis

When these letters came into my possession, I felt them too useful not to share, but too potent to reveal my sources.

Before you read the collection that follows, I wanted to address some common mistakes that people can make with regards to matters of angels and demons: they can believe too much or too little.

The first group fears there are demons everywhere, ready to spring up, which require rapt and diligent attention. They see spiritual significance and motivation in everything from a news headline to what parking spot they get at the grocery store.

The second group doesn’t consider their influence enough. They write off the demons of scripture as misdiagnosed mental illness or the superstitions of a time before modern scientific inquiry. They think the world is driven by rules or chaos, but not by personalities with conflicting aims. As these letters show, Satan loves both extremes and works off those stereotypes to keep us in noise and chaos.

At the heart of it all is this truth: the devil is a liar. In fact, he is the father of lies. I can imagine him hissing the lies that we tell ourselves and each other. As you can imagine then, some of what is exclaimed with confidence in the following letters may be right. Some may be wrong. Some may sound right, but are misleading or are twisted in a way to dilute the impact. Truth with a twist, if you will. It is for you, dear reader, to prayerfully judge for yourself with your faith community. To aid your discernment, there is a Discussion Guide provided that covers the topics in these letters.

A list of resources also appears in the back of this anthology. Sadly, it seems that demons are prone to plagiarism, so the content of the letters has been thoroughly researched and themes and ideas worthy of deeper study have been suggested to the best of my ability.

I encourage further reading and study, as these letters only scratch the surface of what can be known about spiritual warfare. The battle might not be as tidy as the demonic author of these letters, Dredmira Blackwell, chose to address in her correspondence. Perhaps she was deploying a gentlelady’s sensibility. Perhaps she knew the letters might be leaked (as one might expect from someone so fond of self-promotion) and there were secrets too powerful to reveal.

This collection is dedicated to every young person finding their way through the thicket of this world, despite the opposition, to their eternal creator who loves them and is for them!

Jennifer
